INFO |
Café Pudding is located on the North Sea island Wangerooge and has become the symbol of the island where you have to go at least once during a visit to the island. Not just because it's in the center and right on the beach, but because it's been family-owned right from the start. The aim of the Folkerts family is to offer their guests local food with a few culinary specialties in between, which the family discover on their own travels. On top of that - the best home-made cakes are baked here. In the evenings you can watch the breathtaking sunset. There is often a special cocktail or gin which you can drink and relax in the cozy corner away from the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. You can actually spend the entire day at Café Pudding, tasting the delicacies and enjoying the ambience. However, please do not sip on a cup of coffee all day sitting at the best table - there are other guests who would like to enjoy the view as well. |

ABOUT US |
Dear guests, We are often asked why pudding means pudding. We are happy to tell you the story of our pile of sand. We know from 1859 that 500 m north of the lighthouse - on 1.10.1855 a dune beacon was erected as a sign for coastal shipping. At the beginning of the First World War, the dune beacon was broken off and the old west tower was blown up. At some point the name pudding was created. In Oldenburg and Bremen one says I'll go around the pudding, if you want to take a breath around the block. Here on Wangerooge, it is a good idea to walk down the Zedeliusstraße towards the beach, to circle the dune, to watch the sea and listen to the sound of the waves and then to start the return journey. Probably the name pudding was created for this dune. Before the stone steps on the north and south side were built in 1930, they were very narrow and made of wood. The flat surface above was paved and benches set up. On a metal plate with directional arrows you could see where Helgoland, the Red Sand lighthouse and the various lightships are to be found. In World War II Wangerooge was outpost for the war harbour Willhelmshaven. In 1944, a bunker was built on the pudding and then installed a wireless device, which was dismantled after the war - only the bunker stopped In 1946, the bunkers in the village, which could not be blown up, were leased as storerooms. Only the bunker on the pudding wanted to have no one. By chance, we learned about it and leased it immediately. The English occupying forces demanded that the walls be demilitarized. This was our intention and was accomplished with a great deal of effort. In July 1948 we were able to buy an ice machine and the bunker became a kiosk for ice cream and cakes, which we got from our bakery on Zedeliusstraße. The plans to rebuild the bunker and to make a cafe were now finished and in the winter of 1948/49 the pudding was built. There were many difficulties - not only in terms of the material. On June 4, 1949 was the opening. We gave ourselves - and still today we make a lot of effort to make our guests' stay pleasant and to offer them good. Some years later we were able to acquire the property. In the winter of 1971/72 we rebuilt the pudding. The terrace, in good weather very well visited, had to give way to a solid roof, so that the building can better withstand the autumn and winter storms. Within 4 meters the cafe was rebuilt and created a lot of new space. The old bunker is still our buffet. The bakery on Zedeliusstrasse was leased after we set up a modern pastry shop on Peterstraße. From here, Cafe Pudding and our branch at the foot of the pudding are supplied with cakes and pastries from our own production. In 1992, the south front was redone and the entrance area was brighter and friendlier. In order to offer our guests back a place in the sun, we built in 1995 a new terrace on the south side with a beautiful view over the Zedeliusstraße on the old lighthouse. In 2006 our beach house was built on the west side. A cozy fireplace corner invites you to relax with a glass of wine.
Come over and try it. |
